We are all called to defend the cause of the orphan and widow. James 1:27 says “Religion that is pure before God the Father is to visit orphans and widows in their affliction.” At Project 82 Kenya, we are committed to following God’s call through ministry, child sponsorship, infant rescue, and the guardian programs. Our child sponsorship program provides for basic care of a child- food, clothing, shelter- plus education, healthcare, and a future.
We provide care and support for over 200 children and 50 adults in our Molo Community. Forty-two children live in our children’s home called The House of Hope. They range in age from 3 to 16. But the majority of our children live in Guardian homes, individuals in the community who have willingly taken in orphan children. We support the entire family, by teaching life skills to the adults so they can one day provide for the children. On Saturdays we have devotions and spiritual development for the children and guardians. We developed a partnership with a local church who embraces the family and the community.
What really distinguishes us from many child sponsorship programs, is that in most cases, when a child turn 18 they “age-out” of the program. In Kenya, the highest suicide rate is among young adults, age 18-24, who were once a part of a child sponsorship program, aged out and could not find a job or afford to complete high school. They have no hope. In our program, a child “graduates” as a young adult ready to enter the world, but always having the love of P82 at their backs. Following the completion of high school, every child is given the opportunity to attend trade school, 2-year technical college or 4 -year university depending upon their school scores. We currently have 17 children in trade school, 3 in Technical College and 3 in University. The best part, though, is that these students regularly visit our Molo community. They encourage the younger children to study and they are a symbol of hope. The younger children look up to these college students as positive role models- homegrown from the community.
First and foremost, the over arching belief that we hold on to is every child deserves a family. Every child deserves to be loved by and cared for by adults who will be with them throughout their livese to share in special moments and celebrate them together. Every child should be given roots to grow and wings to fly. No child ever truly leaves our program- they will always stay in our hearts and in our prayers.
This is the first in a 4 part series on our Child Sponsorship. Come back next week for Part 2: Roots to Grow
