About Molo

Located in the western Rift Valley of Kenya, Molo was a small town that exploded in growth following the 2008 post election violence that caused many to flee for safety.  Molo town hosted one of the largest IDP (internally displaced persons) camps in Kenya with nearly 40,000 people who fled from the greater Rift Valley Province.  Countless children were orphaned as a result of the violence leaving many of them deeply traumatized by what they witnessed.

Tragedy struck again in 2009 when a petrol tanker overturned near the IDP camp causing an explosion that killed more than 100 people instantly and sadly resulted in more orphans.  As peace resumed in the greater Rift Valley Province, many IDPs vacated the camp to return to their homes leaving orphans behind with no guardians to care for them.

One of the local churches acting as a distribution center for government relief food began ministering to the orphans living in the camp.  As families continued leaving the camp to return to their farms, the church soon realized that these orphans had no one to care for them.  They organized a committee to find guardian homes for the children and to solicit food and clothing donations from the community.  Today there are 161 children in the orphan program administered by the church any many have been turned away due to lack of resources.

Today Molo could be described as a community in crisis resulting from the violence and conflict that forced thousands of people to flee to the area with little infrastructure to support the massive and overwhelming needs created by the influx. Its difficult to see the future of the community but easy to see the desperate and immediate needs of the orphans who were left behind. PROJECT 82 is committed to providing the relief assistance currently needed for the orphans and to rescuing those who may be on the streets or in unsafe environments today. We are praying for peace and reconciliation in Molo as we work with community leaders on those efforts. It is our hope that the community will move from one in crisis to being united at which time we will focus on the transition from relief projects to empowerment projects.
