Women empowerment is a global issue. Today, the UN estimates 70% of the world’s poor are women. Women also face more obstacles in getting a good education which is required to lift themselves out of poverty. Project 82 Kenya began in 2009 as a response to the abject poverty and lack of family stability that plagues so many children of Kenya. Into that calling, God’s grace that led us to develop the idea of family-centered care, with a focus on building strong, self-sustaining families. Whenever possible, our children live with their family or extended family. However, when that is not possible, foster mothers called “guardians” care for the children who need families. We want to empower these women to be able to sustain their families and care for the children of their community.
Several churches in the US came together to provide funding so that sewing machines and supplies could be purchased and a tailor hired from the local community. Over several months, the women learned how to sew things like aprons, men’s clothes, feminine kits, and even school uniforms for the children.
“In 2016, We bought sewing machines for our guardians to be empowered with tailoring skills. Ever since then, the thunderous noises from the sewing machines have scared poverty away from their lives. We are glad that the women have moved from strength to strength and now slowly beginning to pull their families from the shameful dungeons of abject poverty they have been languishing in.
“Their story is a testimony of the old adage about God that; He has good plans for His people. We are grateful to all those who have been part of this empowerment journey. Your acts of compassion have now become an embodiment of hope for many families here in Molo. ” – Mary, Community Director
